The Ballard Middle School project included a complete renovation of the existing 90,000 sq. ft. facility as well as a new addition that allowed for the expansion of administrative, cafeteria, and kitchen functions and the creation of a new dynamic, secure entrance.
The 21st century principles of collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking were incorporated into the design via the insertion of technology-rich collaboration zones within grade-specific small learning communities. These zones promote cross-disciplinary education and enhance interaction between students and teachers as well as provide a unique setting for learning, social interaction and development.
Project successes include the incorporation of natural light into all learning spaces, the creation of multiple outdoor gathering spaces, and the integration of sustainable design practices via improved building envelope, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. A phased construction strategy was implemented to allow for construction to occur simultaneously with school activities.
